For decades, Camp Sumatanga has been more than a place—it’s been a thin place for me and my family. It’s where the line between heaven and earth feels a little closer, a sacred space where faith is deepened, and lives are transformed.
My journey with Camp Sumatanga began in 3rd grade, when I attended summer camp for the first time. From that moment, Sumatanga became a cornerstone of my faith, my friendships, and my future. Every summer, I returned—first as a camper, then as a counselor, and eventually as part of the camp staff.
When by brother Matt was directing Jr. High camps, I joined him as a counselor, helping guide younger campers in their own spiritual journeys. Sumatanga even gave me the greatest blessing of all—it’s where I met Melissa, my wife, years before either of us knew how our paths would come together later on in life.
Last summer, my oldest daughter Sadie attended Camp Sumatanga for the first time, continuing the family tradition. Watching her experience the joy, connection, and spiritual growth that Sumatanga offers filled my heart. This place isn’t just part of my story; it’s woven into the fabric of our family.
That’s why I said “yes” almost two years ago when asked to serve on the Board of Trustees for Camp Sumatanga. It’s been an honor to work alongside others who care deeply about ensuring this place remains a beacon of faith for generations to come.
