CHRYSTAL WHITEHEAD'S CAMP STORY:

I grew up in Oxford, AL and currently call Sylacauga home. My husband and I have four amazing kids, 2 chickens, 5 grand-dogs, and 5 grand-cats. This past summer marks the 43rd year of Camp Sumatanga for me – everything from being a camper, counselor, director (I think they call those deans now), and paid staff to retreat leader/participant, Emmaus pilgrim/team member, SEJ work-shopper, COYM weekender, and simple I-need-to-be-in-the-presence-of-God day hiker.

For me, the most important thing I’ve experienced at Camp has been open, authentic, diverse, eye-opening, and inspiring dialogue with fellow sojourners on my spiritual journey. With every opportunity I’ve ever had to be in community at Camp this type of dialogue has been very intentional and it has shaped my life completely. I have no doubt that God brought me, and continues to bring me back, to Sumatanga. My passion for others to experience this same communion is what drives me to encourage any and everyone I know to call Sumatanga home.
